The 2022 Asia Cup, which is also known as the DP World Asia Cup due to sponsorship, is the 15th iteration of the Asia Cup cricket competition. The matches will be contested as Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) in the United Arab Emirates in August and September of that year. The COVID-19 pandemic caused the tournament to be postponed in July 2020 from its original September 2020 date. It was subsequently postponed, first to Sri Lanka in June 2021 and then again After winning the privilege to host the 2022 edition, Pakistan was set to host the tournament. However, the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) declared in October 2021 that Pakistan would host the 2023 edition of the event, while Sri Lanka will host it in 2022. India is the reigning world champion.

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) notified the ACC on July 21, 2022, that they would not be able to host the event due to the country's economic and political turmoil.

The ACC announced on July 27, 2022, that the competition would be held in the United Arab Emirates, with Sri Lanka Cricket serving as the event's hosts.

On August 2, 2022, the tournament's schedule was released.

The Asian Cricket Council granted the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) the right to host the event in December 2018. (ACC).

It was not known whether the matches would take place in Pakistan or the United Arab Emirates, but The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) requested that the PCB relocate the event's location after the announcement was made owing to ongoing security concerns. With the 2008 Asia Cup, Pakistan last hosted a multi-team international competition. Following the 2009 attack on the Sri Lanka national cricket team, only a small number of international matches have been played in Pakistan since then.

The ACC announced in May 2019 that Pakistan will host the competition.

Given the continuing political animosity between the two nations, India's participation in the competition was questioned by the choice of Pakistan as the tournament's host nation.

The ACC was still to decide whether Pakistan will be the tournament's host in October 2019, as there had been concerns voiced over India's participation. Several media agencies stated in January 2020 that Pakistan will not be serving as the tournament's host because to continuing political concerns with India.

According to Sourav Ganguly, president of the BCCI, "the Asia Cup will be staged in Dubai and both India and Pakistan will play."

The chairman of the PCB, Ehsan Mani, refuted Ganguly's claim the next day, claiming that the location had not yet been decided. The ACC was initially planned to convene on March 3, 2020, to debate the venue of the competition, but due to the COVID-19 epidemic, the conference was postponed until the end of March. Mani said that the competition would take place in a neutral site on March 7. He acknowledged the next month that the pandemic might prevent the tournament from happening at all.

Following a meeting with the ACC in June 2020, the PCB declared they would allow Sri Lanka to host the tournament if India refused to visit Pakistan.

After the meeting, the ACC released a press release stating that "potential venue possibilities for the Asia Cup 2020 were considered and it was decided to take the ultimate decision in due time" due to the "effects and implications of the COVID-19 pandemic." The ACC made a formal notification regarding the postponement in July 2021.  After India made it to the World Test Championship final, which conflicted with the suggested dates in June, the tournament was in danger of getting postponed again in March 2021.

In July 2020, the qualifying tournament was postponed.

The ACC announced in May 2021 that the 2021 Asia Cup would not take place and would instead be held in 2023.

Ramiz Raja announced that Pakistan would host the subsequent tournament in 2023, with Sri Lanka hosting the 2022 edition, following a meeting with the ACC in October 2021. In August 2022, a qualification tournament was held.

Due to widespread protests and the country's economic difficulties, the SLC Secretary Mohan de Silva announced on July 17, 2022, that the event would be held in the United Arab Emirates.

The UAE and Kuwait, who advanced from the 2020 ACC Western Region T20, along with Singapore and Hong Kong, who passed through the 2020 ACC Eastern Region T20, competed in the qualification tournament in August 2022.

After winning the qualifying, Hong Kong earned a spot in the main tournament.
