Historically, the tournament has taken place every two years. The tournament was originally slated to take place in Australia in 2020, however owing to COVID-19, it was moved to 2021 and given India as the new host country, taking place five years after the 2016 edition. The matches were moved to Oman and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) due of the COVID-19 outbreak in India. The ICC proposed holding a competition in 2018, with South Africa as a potential host, in May 2016. However, the ICC abandoned the notion of a 2018 tournament following the completion of the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy.

Only the West Indies has won the competition several times out of the seven tournaments that have been played thus far. India won the first World Twenty20 tournament in 2007, which was held in South Africa, defeating Pakistan in the championship match at Wanderers Stadium.

The 2009 competition was held in England, and it was won by Pakistan, the previous runner-up, who defeated Sri Lanka in the championship game at Lord's. The nations that make up the West Indies cricket squad hosted the third competition in 2010. England won their first international competition by defeating Australia in the final in Barbados, which was held at Kensington Oval.

The 2012 World Twenty20, the fourth competition, was staged in Asia for the first time, with all of the games taking place in Sri Lanka. The West Indies won the competition by defeating Sri Lanka in the championship match, becoming the first nation to do so since the Champions Trophy in 2004. The 2014 ICC World Twenty20, the fifth competition, was held in Bangladesh and won by Sri Lanka over India. Sri Lanka was the first team to compete in three finals.

West Indies defeated England to win the sixth competition, the 2016 ICC World Twenty20, which was held in India. Australia currently holds the T20 World Cup after defeating New Zealand in the final to claim their first championship.
